For Hugo Ramirez, Business Development Officer at Affinity Federal Credit Union, giving back isn't just something he does, it's a promise he's carried with him for decades.

Growing up in the Stamford, Connecticut area, Hugo often saw men walking to and from Pacific House, a men's shelter serving individuals experiencing homelessness. Even as a child, he told himself that one day he would find a way to help. Today, nearly 30 years later, that promise has become a reality.

Working alongside dedicated community partners and volunteers, Hugo has organized free haircut and grooming events for individuals and families who may not otherwise have access to these services. He has brought these events to organizations including Pacific House, a men’s shelter, and Augustana Homes, a senior community, partnering with local barbers and stylists, including Westport Cut & Shave, Mr. Maquina Barber Shop and Hair by Julia Moore, to provide free haircuts, shaves, manicures and other personal care services.

Hugo also works with local businesses such as Dunkin’ and Five Below to assemble and distribute essential gift bags filled with everyday necessities. Together, these efforts have reached approximately 200 people, providing not only practical support, but also moments of connection, dignity and confidence for those in need.

His commitment to giving back extends throughout the year, including special outreach efforts around Father’s Day and the holidays, as well as an upcoming back-to-school initiative for a Stamford housing community, where he plans to distribute backpacks to local children and families. Hugo also shares his expertise through financial literacy programming at a recovery center in Bridgeport, helping individuals develop the knowledge and skills to build a stronger financial future.

Through each of these efforts, Hugo demonstrates that community wellbeing can take many forms, from a fresh haircut and a bag of essentials to the financial knowledge needed to take the next step forward.

“Volunteerism, to me, is about being there for people when they need it most. Even the smallest act of kindness, a haircut, a bag of essentials, or a backpack for a child, can make a meaningful difference. Growing up, I always hoped that one day I’d have the opportunity to give back, and I’m grateful to fulfill that promise by working alongside local businesses, volunteers, and community organizations to remind people they are not alone.” – Hugo Ramirez

At Affinity, we believe wellbeing extends far beyond financial products. It means investing in people, strengthening communities, and creating opportunities for everyone to thrive. Hugo's volunteer work is a powerful example of that commitment in action. By combining compassion, community partnerships, and financial education, he's helping improve lives one person, one family, and one neighborhood at a time.

We're proud to celebrate team members like Hugo, whose dedication reminds us that the greatest impact often begins with a simple promise to give back.
