2026 Extra Special Prom
The spirit of the 1950s came alive on May 14, 2026, when the Summit Area YMCA hosted its annual Extra Special Prom, *Shake, Rattle & Roll! *, at the Berkeley Heights YMCA. 70 prom attendees enjoyed an evening of dancing, laughter, and celebration, while 65 parents and guardians gathered nearby for dinner and fellowship. The event was made possible by the incredible support of nearly 200 volunteers who helped create a memorable experience for everyone involved.
Events like this are made possible through the generosity and commitment of volunteers, YMCA staff members, and community supporters who work together to create an unforgettable evening. Special recognition goes to Summit Elks Lodge #1246 for its ongoing sponsorship and dedication to helping this cherished tradition thrive year after year.
As the celebration drew to a close, attendees headed home with smiles, treasured photographs, and lasting memories. Most importantly, they left feeling welcomed, valued, and embraced by their community.
Among those in attendance was our own Daniel von Schaumburg, who reflected on the impact of the evening:
“I believe anyone who has the opportunity to volunteer at the Special Needs Prom should take part. The joy and excitement on the participants’ faces is something you'll never forget, it's truly life changing. It's also a special evening for parents, giving them a chance to relax, unwind, and connect with others who share similar experiences. Thank you to the YMCA for hosting this incredible event!”
More than an annual celebration, the 2026 Extra Special Prom highlighted the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels included, supported, and celebrated. It served as a powerful reminder that community is at its strongest when everyone has the opportunity to belong.
