A Community Connected: Celebrating Credit Unions

By John Fenton
President & CEO, Affinity Federal Credit Union

For nearly 70 years, International Credit Union Day (ICU) Day® has been celebrated globally on the third Thursday of October. This year, it falls on October 19, 2017. The day serves to recognize the credit union movement and promote the notable accomplishments of credit unions around the world.

Happy Credit Union Day

The 2017 ICU Day® theme, "Dreams Thrive Here," demonstrates how credit unions and other financial cooperatives fully strive to provide their members with a robust financial life. For Affinity Federal Credit Union, it’s also a time for us to show our community connected, made up of members, employees and friends, how appreciated they truly are.

Affinity and fellow credit unions across the United States share a common yet often overlooked bond – we are a not-for-profit financial cooperative committed to improving the financial lives of all who seek our help. But what does that mean and how does it benefit our members?

For us, our work for and relationships with our members are personal, not just transactional. And because Affinity is a member-owned financial cooperative, profits aren’t shared with stockholders. They’re shared with our members in the form of greater accessibility, convenience and value. What’s truly amazing is the community connected that our cooperative structure creates. It’s a place where Kelly’s savings deposits help Sara go to college and Bill’s mortgage payments help Kelly get better savings account rates. We work together to achieve financial success. This is what makes a cooperative like Affinity a very different experience.

Our members are much more than names on an application. They are part of the Affinity family, and as family, we are dedicated to improving the financial lives of our members who come from all social, economic and demographic communities. We take our members’ character and unique circumstances into consideration, and do the best we can to support them at times when a helping hand is appreciated. The diverse needs of our members help us shape decisions to deliver new products and improve existing ones.

As we continue to evolve our offerings, we want our members to know they have a voice that is heard – on International Credit Union day and every single day.

At Affinity, the engagement of our current and prospective members is vital to our shared financial journey. If you’re not a member but would like to join our family, please visit joinaffinity.com or call us at 800.325.0808 to learn more information.
