The cost of staying in a career that doesn’t ignite your passion goes far beyond your paycheck—it impacts your entire life, including your overall wellbeing. According to Gallup 1, career wellbeing is about liking what you do daily. Yet, the harsh reality is that only about half of U.S. workers are extremely or very satisfied with their jobs, according to a Pew Research Center survey 2. This dissatisfaction doesn’t just affect your mood—it affects your wallet, your health, and your future.

Spending 40+ hours a week in a job that doesn't inspire you can take a toll over time, and it's not just your mood that suffers. The stress from an unfulfilling job can sometimes lead to impulsive spending or other financial choices that don't align with your long-term goals. It's easy to justify an occasional splurge. Still, when it becomes a habit, superfluous spending can impact your financial wellbeing, and it is a short-term distraction that fails to address a larger issue.

The problem with staying in a job you don't love can trap you in a cycle of dissatisfaction. You might believe any job will be just as unfulfilling, so why bother looking for something better? But the reality is that staying in a job that doesn't bring you joy can cost you more than just your happiness. It can cost you your overall wellbeing.

When you're passionate about your work, you're more likely to be productive and engaged, leading to better job performance and higher earnings. Over time, this can translate into more raises, promotions, and a stronger sense of financial security. If we view ourselves as having job satisfaction, making positive and meaningful contributions, it can have a positive effect on our overall well-being and vice versa.

There is a strong connection between your career satisfaction and financial health. When you're unhappy at work, it often increases stress, which can ripple into other areas of your life, including your finances. The good news is that you can take control of this situation and turn things around. Here are some actionable steps you can start taking today to improve both your career and overall wellbeing:

  1. Audit your career: Take a hard look at your current job. What aspects do you enjoy? What drains you? It might be time to consider a change if the negatives outweigh the positives. Reflect on what you want and map out the steps you’ll take to achieve your goals.
  2. Invest in yourself: If you’re not where you want to be career-wise, what’s holding you back? Is it a lack of skills? Fear of change? Investing in your education or professional development can be a game-changer. Look for courses that interest you and will add to your skillset.  Do your research – some classes are low-cost and sometimes free of charge!
  3. Build a financial safety net: Before making big career moves, ensure you have a financial cushion. This allows you to explore new opportunities without the pressure of immediate financial strain.
  4. Seek purpose, not just a paycheck: While a higher salary is always appealing, it’s not the only factor in career satisfaction. Look for roles that align with your values, offer growth opportunities, and excite you. Remember the classic saying: “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”
  5. Leverage resources: Build your professional network, attend industry events, connect with other professionals on business social media platforms.  Build value-added relationships that will help you achieve your goals.  Remember, your credit union is more than just a place to keep your money. We offer financial counseling, career development resources, and educational opportunities to help you on your journey to career wellbeing.

By aligning your work with what truly excites and motivates you, you create a robust foundation for your overall wellbeing.
